Does melanoma spead fast or at what rate does it spread?

my husband has just been told he has it been going to doctors for about 6 to 8 months he said it was nothing to worry about he said it was just abscess but insisted he done biopsy they have said they have to move fast on this as it fast spreading so it worries me he has had for that long
